South Street Seaport Museum to Host Free Sea Chanteys and Maritime Music Event in September

NEW YORK – The South Street Seaport Museum is bringing the spirit of the sea to life this fall with a free Sea Chanteys and Maritime Music event set for Sunday, September 7, 2025, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The lively gathering will take place aboard the 1885 tall ship Wavertree at Pier 16, offering guests of all ages a chance to immerse themselves in a centuries-old maritime tradition.

A Celebration of Maritime Heritage Through Song

The event is part of the Museum’s monthly sea-song singalong series, which welcomes singers and music lovers of all backgrounds. Local performers will lead participants in traditional maritime work songs and ballads—once used by sailors to keep rhythm and lift morale during long voyages.

Guests are encouraged to take part in any way they choose:

  • Lead a song with your own voice.
  • Join the chorus and sing along with the crowd.
  • Sit back and enjoy the atmosphere of live, home-made music.

Community and Culture on the Waterfront

Sea chanteys hold a unique place in history, reflecting the diverse cultures of New York’s bustling seafaring community. “When we sing these songs today—some old, and some updated with up-to-the-moment lyrics—we celebrate our connection with our maritime heritage and also with the community we create by enjoying home-made music together,” said Laura Norwitz, Senior Director of Program and Education at the Museum.

Step Aboard the Historic Wavertree

Admission to the singalong also grants visitors access to the Wavertree, a National Register of Historic Places vessel that circumnavigated the globe at least three times during her 24-year career. Guests will be able to explore the ship’s decks and learn more about her storied past while enjoying the music.

Registration and Attendance

While advanced registration is encouraged to secure a spot, walk-ups will be welcomed as space allows. The event is free to attend, making it a perfect outing for families, history enthusiasts, and music lovers alike.
