McDOWELL, KENTUCKY — The Kentucky State Police (KSP) have opened a death investigation following the discovery of a woman shot to death in Floyd County late last week.

Authorities identified the victim as 34-year-old Jill Howell of Prestonsburg, who was found fatally shot inside a residence on East Back Street in McDowell.

KSP troopers and the Floyd County Coroner’s Office responded to the home on Thursday, where Howell was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ongoing Investigation and Autopsy Ordered

Investigators said preliminary findings indicate Howell died from a single gunshot wound, though the circumstances leading to the shooting remain under investigation.

The woman’s body was transported to the Kentucky State Medical Examiner’s Office for a full autopsy to determine the official cause and manner of death.

Police have not released any information about possible suspects or arrests.

Residents in McDowell, a small community in Floyd County, expressed shock at the news, describing the area as typically quiet and tight-knit. Authorities have urged anyone with information related to the case to come forward.
