Greensboro Police Arrest Suspect in 2022 Murder of NC A&T Freshman

GREENSBORO, North Carolina — Nearly three years after the tragic shooting of North Carolina A&T freshman Kaneycha Turner, Greensboro police have announced the arrest of a suspect. Rishon Elias Weaver, 20, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection to Turner’s death.

The shooting, which took place in October 2022 at an off-campus apartment complex on Circle Drive, left six people shot. Among the victims, Turner, 19, and 15-year-old Ronaldlee Snipes were killed. Four others survived their injuries.

Arrest and Charges

On Friday, the Greensboro Police Department confirmed Weaver’s arrest, charging him specifically with Turner’s murder. Authorities clarified that the charge is separate from the case involving Snipes’ death.

Weaver was only a teenager at the time of the shooting but now faces adult charges. He remains in custody as the case proceeds through the courts.

Family Reaction

For nearly three years, Turner’s mother, LaToya Rucker, has waited for answers. She described the arrest as a mix of relief and lingering sorrow.

“I can’t even describe the feeling that I got when I heard the words,” Rucker said. “I was overjoyed, I was happy, I was sad.”

While grateful that someone is being held accountable, she said the pain of losing her daughter remains constant.
“I just miss her, her voice, her smile, her face. I just miss her,” she shared.

Remembering Kaneycha Turner

Friends and family remember Turner as kind, funny, and smart. She had just begun her freshman year at NC A&T when her life was cut short.

Rucker emphasized that this arrest means her daughter’s death will not simply fade into a cold case. “I’m just so happy knowing that my baby’s death ain’t in vain. It’s not gonna be in vain. I refuse to let it be in vain.”

The arrest marks a major development in a case that has haunted Turner’s loved ones and the Greensboro community since 2022. Authorities hope this progress provides a measure of justice while the investigation continues.
