Indianapolis Teen Mom Shot in Head by Boyfriend in Front of Daughter, Then He Tried to Blame Suicide, Police Say

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — A 20-year-old man is facing murder charges after police say he shot his teenage girlfriend in the head in front of her young daughter and then tried to cover it up by claiming she killed herself.

The suspect, Tyairz Glover, allegedly confessed in a text message to his mother, writing: “He shot her (in) the head,” before police arrested him on September 26 at the Amber Woods apartments near 38th and Mitthoefer.

Victim Identified as 19-Year-Old LaNya Anderson

The victim was identified as LaNya Anderson, a 19-year-old mother. Authorities say the fatal shooting happened after an argument early Friday morning inside her apartment.

Witnesses and family friends told police they had been aware of domestic disputes between Anderson and Glover prior to the killing.

“I heard my own daughter’s friends crying, saying how they tried to help,” said family friend and advocate Danyette Smith, who described the tragedy as “devastating to hear as a mother”.

Family Heartbreak

Anderson’s parents told the Indianapolis Star they knew the relationship was troubled but never imagined it would end in murder.

Her mother, Dionna Sweeney, said Anderson called her just before the shooting. She could hear them arguing on the phone until the call suddenly disconnected.

About 20 minutes later, Glover allegedly called her back to say Anderson had died — claiming she had shot herself.

Her father, Quincy Sweeney, expressed regret: “I tried as a father to get her away. I didn’t win. She kept going back. I felt like I didn’t do enough. What do I tell my grandbaby when she says she wants her mama?”

Suspect’s Troubling History

Police said Glover’s mother told them he suffered from mental health problems and had previously threatened violence, including threats to kill her.

Glover is now charged with murder and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. He is being held without bond.

The killing has devastated Anderson’s family and highlighted the deadly dangers of domestic violence. Advocates stress the importance of recognizing red flags and seeking help before disputes turn fatal.
