Driver Arrested After Crashing Into West Allis Police Car, Faces 3rd OWI Charge

WEST ALLIS, WISCONSIN — A West Allis man is behind bars after police say he crashed into a police squad car and attempted to flee the scene Sunday evening, marking his third arrest for operating while intoxicated (OWI).

According to the West Allis Police Department, the collision occurred around 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of 68th Street and Becher Street. Officials said the squad car was stopped at a red light when it was rear-ended by a pickup truck.

Driver Tried to Flee Before Being Tasered and Arrested

After the crash, police say the driver exited the vehicle and attempted to run away on foot. Officers quickly pursued him, and one officer deployed a Taser to subdue and take the suspect into custody.

Authorities confirmed that the man was arrested for operating while under the influence of an intoxicant (OWI) — his third such offense.

No officers or bystanders were reported injured in the incident. Damage to the squad car and the pickup truck is still being assessed.

Investigation Underway Following Arrest

The West Allis Police Department said the investigation remains ongoing as officers review the suspect’s prior OWI record and collect evidence from the scene.

Officials reiterated their ongoing focus on drunk driving prevention following a string of recent OWI-related arrests across southeastern Wisconsin.

Residents are reminded that Wisconsin law carries increased penalties for multiple OWI convictions, including jail time, license revocation, and ignition interlock requirements.

Authorities say the swift arrest likely prevented further harm, emphasizing the risks of impaired driving during evening traffic hours.
