Indiana State Police Mourn Loss of Beloved K-9 ‘Barker,’ Found Dead at Jasper Post at Age 8

JASPER, INDIANA — The Indiana State Police are mourning the unexpected death of K-9 “Barker,” a highly respected and much-loved service dog who passed away on Saturday due to unforeseen medical reasons, officials confirmed.

The ISP Jasper Post said no foul play is suspected in Barker’s death. The eight-year-old K-9 was known across southern Indiana for his loyal service, courage, and community outreach.

Faithful Partner Remembered for Courage and Dedication

Barker served alongside Trooper Jacob Lauer as a dual-purpose K-9, trained in both patrol operations and narcotics detection. Throughout his career, Barker assisted in numerous criminal investigations, drug seizures, and suspect apprehensions, as well as public demonstrations that strengthened community trust in law enforcement.

“K-9s are more than just working partners — they become part of our family,” said ISP Lt. Brock Werne, reflecting on Barker’s years of dedicated service.
