Belmont Man Accused of Tying Up and Torturing His Elderly Parents for 12 Hours Inside Their New Hampshire Home
BELMONT, NEW HAMPSHIRE — A 42-year-old man is behind bars after authorities say he kidnapped, tied up, and violently assaulted his elderly parents for nearly 12 hours inside their home, leaving both victims hospitalized with severe injuries.
The Belmont Police Department confirmed that Nathaniel Kay was arrested on October 15 and now faces multiple felony charges, including two counts each of kidnapping, criminal restraint, and simple assault, as well as four counts of second-degree assault.
The victims — Kay’s 82-year-old father and 77-year-old mother — were found battered and bloodied inside their Cotton Hill Road home, roughly 40 miles north of Manchester.
Violent Ordeal Lasted for Half a Day
According to charging documents obtained by The Laconia Daily Sun, the violence unfolded over the course of October 14 and 15, with police describing the scene as one of the most prolonged domestic attacks they’ve seen.
Authorities say Kay punched, kicked, and tied his parents with a clothesline, then dragged them into the garage, where the beatings continued before forcing them back into the house.
“Usually, we’ll respond to incidents like this when something has just happened,” said Belmont Police Chief Stephen Akerstom. “Not over the course of 12 hours. That’s really the difference here.”
Police said the torture finally stopped hours before one of the victims convinced their son to let them call for an ambulance, on the condition that they pretend it was due to a fall down the stairs.
Evidence Found Throughout the Home
When firefighters arrived for what they believed was a medical call, they quickly noticed signs of foul play and alerted police.
Officers discovered blood throughout the home, visible bruising on one victim’s face, and bloody clothing in a laundry hamper. One victim told investigators that Kay even strangled his father with a rope, nearly killing him.
Both parents were rushed to the hospital. The mother was treated for a brain bleed, and the father suffered a broken nose and several fractured ribs, police said.
Suspect Held Without Bail as Case Advances
Kay was initially charged with domestic violence, but more serious charges were filed after investigators confirmed the extent of the injuries. He is currently being held in preventive detention at the Belknap County Jail.
Court records show Kay waived his probable cause hearing, and the case is expected to move to Belknap County Superior Court for trial.
Authorities have not released a motive, but described the crime as “uniquely disturbing” given the prolonged duration and brutality of the attack.
As the small Belmont community reels from the incident, police are urging residents to report any signs of elder abuse or domestic violence immediately. For ongoing updates on crime and justice news across New England, visit ChicagoMusicGuide.com.
